Joel's Computer Project

OK, if you're reading this, you probably already know I'm trying to build my own computer. I figured this is the easiest way to document my progress. Obviously, I'm not going to carry it around with me and I don't feel like emailing pictures to a bunch of people everytime I attach one more component. This seems like the easiest way to show anyone who actually cares about this project.

It's also forced me to try to relearn a little html along the way.

OK, it's essentially done. I have more applications to install and some maintenance to do, but in a lot of ways it's done. It runs, gets online, drives are partitioned, and I have a bunch of applications installed.

What's left:

  • A few cosmetic changes (more case modification and custom wiring)
  • New monitor(s) and video card
  • New speakers
  • And, put the computer where it's going to stay. For now, it's just been on a table so I'd have room to work on it. I have a little computer area that I need to paint & stuff, where the old one used to be.

It's been a while since the last update. I have it mostly done, I just haven't gotten around to updating the site till now.

The computer runs fine but I haven't really had much chance to use it yet. It's like when people are constantly working on their cars but never get to drive it. I got the replacement hard drive and installed it. I still have a way to go, but for now, the operating system & drivers are installed, and a few applications, but I still have a few more to install. There's still more to do and a bit more to document. I have a feeling it'll never be completely finished.

OK, I've got it pretty much put together now. It's not all set up yet, but pretty much all put together.

I sent the defective hard drive back, they received it, and it looks like the replacement has already shipped. I should have it by the end of the week. Also, I've ordered a few more things from FrozenCPU. That stuff will probably wait until I have everything set up the way I want it. Also, the non-rechargeable battery in my digital camera is dead so I need a new one.

I've done a little more. Here's how my new computer looks when it's sleeping.

Update as of 04/12/04

For some reason, Tripod made a mistake and shut this site down. I can tell you what happened if you really want to know. Anyway, I've made more progress on the project than I've been able to document here so far, but I'm in another waiting period so I can work on this site while I wait for more packages.
